Quick Deployment Anchor System

In a rescue situation time is vital. Making the task as efficient and as safe as possible for both the rescue crew and the victim is the top priority. Being able to have equipment to hand at a moments notice can aid rescue operations when those seconds are crucial. Combining these factors resulted in the QD Anchor System through collaboration with experts across the UK.

Who I Am

Personal –

Born and raised on the South Coast of England, studied 3D design at Sussex Downs Vocational College and moved to De Montfort University to gain a 1st class degree in product design.

I would describe myself as an outdoor person, keen on biking, kayaking and kiting. I’ve always enjoyed walks with family and making the most of the coastal scenery. Photography and cameras have always been a strong interest of mine, leading to a growing collection of classic cameras and photographic equipment. This is useful as I’m able to conduct my own photography and product shots.

Career –

In early 2018 I was selected for the role of Product Design Engineer at Chess Dynamics. Chess Dynamics are a specialist in precision stabilised and non-stabilised multi-axis platforms; fire control directors and positioners for electro-optic; radar, communication, security, surveillance and targeting systems; and a wide range of high-performance cameras and special sensors. My role at Chess involved getting new briefs off the ground by creating CAD models to map out the systems, renders and animations to explain our solution and scale models. These would often be used by the Sales team to market the system, and by the Engineering team once the system goes on to the engineering stage.

After university I took up freelance photography and design work for various clients. This was mainly product photography for 2 small businesses and model photography, as well as 3D printing and cad work.

I have had a year out working as a junior designer for BlueFrog Design in Leicester, working in a small, fast paced team carrying out CAD, model making, photography, rendering, graphic work for a broad range of products, while taking care of general admin and client communication.

Market leader in decorative hardware, Crofts And Assinder, assigned a brief to design a door handle/latch for a small space such as a narrow boat or caravan. In which my design was chosen for the final 3 and was taken forward. From then it went on to rapid prototyping and possible real world prototyping. The design, along with my 2 colleagues and their chosen design went down to The Furniture Makers Company design award fair in London.

In 2015 I worked for De Montfort University writing and compiling a workshop user booklet for the facilities in the university, informing students on workshop location, equipment, technicians and essential information to help use their time more efficiently.

Previous to this I worked with the De Montfort mechanic team as part of IMechE’s Formula Student project to build a single seat race car. A small team including myself worked together to produce the front body cone. While collaborating with the engineering department, designs and small scale models were used to finalise the design which was constructed from fiberglass.

Skills –

Design requires a lot of attention to detail and understanding of processes and materials. My years of professional and academic years have enabled to be become familiar with a good range of software packages including:

  • Solidwords

  • Adobe Premiere Pro

  • Adobe After Effects

  • Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator

  • Keyshot

  • Autodesk 3Ds Max

  • Solidworks Visualize

  • CoralDraw

  • Sketchbook Pro

Along with software I have developed as a model maker to the point where I can produce a high level piece consistently within a set time frame, exercising a strong understanding of processes and material properties. Through sketching, I am able to communicate with a client to help us both visualise ideas to aid project progression.
