In my role as Product Design Engineer at Chess Dynamics, it was my responsibility to get new projects off the ground via concept generation, CAD, artistic renders and animations, and scale models. These would enable a new client to understand our solution.
This content would assist the Sales team and Engineering team when the system moved forward from the concept stage. There was a great amount of new innovation to keep up with, new systems, new customers, and I was always needing to keep up with the pace, which at times was more challenging. On top of the design work, I also assisted with exhibitions and marketing material. Using the Adobe suit, brochures, datasheets and website/exhibition material was created to showcase what Chess was capable of.

Paper-free probing
The TaskMinder is designed to wirelessly track vital safety checks and tasks. With a wirelessly integrated temperature probe, the task of cooking, reheating and cooking becomes a more streamlined process.​
During the time spent on this product, I was tasked with adjusting boss depths to fine tune an even click of the 4-way button. Adding to the boss height was the sensible solution as it is a “metal off” process in the tool, saving on cost and time. Through the process of creating custom spacers, the spacing was decided.

A component was to be changed, and it was my duty to CAD up the new component adjustments, made to fit within the tolerances and process of moulding.

Minimising Dysesthesia
Coming from the Greek word “dys” which means “not-normal” and “aesthesis” meaning “sensation”, Dysesthesia is a painful and uncomfortable condition. For the people who suffer from this everyday life is very stressful. Dysesthesia can feel like the skin is burning, crawling, itching and pins and needles. The computer work and final product was produced by myself. Using 3D scanning to get a model to work around, the plate was surface modelled and optimised for vacuum forming. The final unit was cut and finished by hand, and all fabrics and straps secured on.

BioStart
I had a good participation with Biostart, overseeing many stages of the development. The closed cell silicone gaskets, which were to withstand strong vacuum seals for extended durations of time, were hand cut and fitted.
For promotional events, a display base was required, which was designed and assembled mainly by myself. I was set to conduct test runs of the unit after reassembly, with which I had to learn the software and processes of drying.

Photography was primarily one of my areas, along with a fellow colleague. This included images of the final products for use by the client for presentations and advertising and photography for the business website.
HydroTreat
Medical water therapy
The HydroTreat water therapy unit is designed for muscular hydrotherapy. The visual to the right was produced by me for the project. Additional components such as the hose and display panel were modelled up and the preproduction unit was used to capture material finishes and colours to create an accurate render.
Effective and simple safeguarding
DJI Inspire Protection Pack
Filming on set is expensive and time is limited. Rushing to the next location before the sun sets or before the weather changes is common for anyone in the business. In these rushes equipment isn’t packed neatly into cases. The DJI Inspire drone has fragile and vital parts exposed, and failure of these could be the end of filming. Keeping them protected in a rush is essential.

Optimised for 3D printing for small batch production. Laser cut caps to get a better finish on the top surfaces. This project was primarily my responsibility, design work, CAD and testing was undertaken by myself, with regular discussion with fellow design members.
Crofts & Assinder
Crofts & Assinder, well established UK furniture maker specialising in bespoke decorative hardware.
This brief was set to design and produce a cupboard and door handle which would be suited for small space living, such as narrow boats and caravans. Primed with primary research on handle dimensions and finishes, the 1 week concept ideation stage was fast paced but rewarding as my design was 1 of 3 to go forward after being selected by Crofts & Assinder. Small design tweaks and modifications for 3D printing were needed and from there the design was mounted and prepared for the Young Furniture Maker’s fair in London 2015.

Front Runner
De Montfort University hired me to compile a workshop user booklet for the facilities. The aim of the booklet was to inform students on workshop locations, equipment, technicians and essential information which would help them use their time more efficiently. My project plan was to document each workshop, get an understanding of what the space is used for, photograph key points and gather all essential information. With a page layout and theme decided on, the information was laid down and the booklet quickly took shape.
Formula Student
De Montfort takes part in IMechE’s Formula Student project to build a single seat race car. A small team including myself were chosen to work together to produce the front body cone, aswell as other smaller aspects of the car. While collaborating with the engineering department, designs were drawn up and evaluated, which led to design development and small scale models. The small scale models gave a sense of appearance and provided a good start for wind tunnel tests. From then on the final design was produced in fibreglass and potentially carbon fibre.
